Albion slipped to a second home defeat of the season as neighbours Newcastle University left The Oldhaulage with all three points. One bright spot for Ryton was the return to the scoresheet of Aaron Costello, whose first RACA goal in over a season cancelled out James Cleugh’s opener. However, Joel Burgess struck in the second half to secure a 2-1 victory for the Students.

Albion went into the game still searching for their first victory of the new campaign and hoping to extend an unbeaten run against Newcastle University which stretched back across three meetings last season.

The sides had faced each other three times during 2025/26, twice in the league and once in the quarter-finals of the Ernest Armstrong Memorial Cup, with RACA winning two of those encounters before a 1-1 draw at Essity Park in their final meeting.

On another blustery evening at The Oldhaulage, the wind once again played its part as both sides looked to gain the early initiative.

The opening exchanges were lively, with chances at both ends inside the first five minutes. Returning midfielder Louis Anderson was quickly involved, combining well before the ball was worked out wide and crossed into the path of Aaron Costello, while Anderson himself also tested the University goalkeeper as Albion made an encouraging start.

However, it was the visitors who struck first. A quick Newcastle break caught the Ryton defence exposed and, although Callum Corkhill did well to deny the initial effort, James Cleugh was on hand to turn home the rebound and give the Students the lead.

The setback only seemed to sharpen Albion’s attacking intent and their response arrived after 17 minutes. Costello burst into the Newcastle penalty area, found himself a yard of space and fired a fine effort into the bottom corner to level the scores.

It was a welcome moment for the striker, ending a goal drought stretching back more than a season, and gave the home side renewed belief.

Both teams continued to create openings as the half progressed, but some committed defending at either end ensured neither could find a second before the interval.

With the game finely poised, both sides emerged for the second half knowing there was plenty at stake.

Albion thought they had taken the lead 17 minutes after the restart when a crowded Newcastle penalty area eventually saw the ball worked to a Ryton forward, who found the back of the net. Celebrations were cut short, however, by the assistant referee’s flag for offside.

The disappointment was compounded moments later when Newcastle went straight up the other end and regained the lead. The Students broke quickly before working the ball neatly around the Ryton penalty area, with Joel Burgess applying the finishing touch beyond Corkhill to make it 2-1.

Albion pushed for another equaliser as the clock ticked down and came agonisingly close in the 87th minute. A ball over the top of the University defence released Ethan Bewley, but his effort sailed over the crossbar.

With frustration beginning to show as Ryton searched desperately for a way back into the game, Newcastle had an opportunity to put the result beyond doubt in the closing moments. Corkhill raced out to close down the danger but, with the Albion goal left exposed, Nathan Beesley produced an excellent challenge to prevent the visitors adding a third.

The final whistle confirmed another frustrating afternoon for Albion. There had been encouraging spells and chances against a good Newcastle University side, but once again RACA were left without the reward their play perhaps deserved.

Three games into the new season, Ryton remain without a victory, but another opportunity to get that first win on the board arrives quickly with Saturday’s trip to Sunderland RCA.
