FT: RACA 1 Tow Law Town 2

An Albion side lacking the spark shown during pre-season slipped to defeat in the opening fixture of the 2026/27 campaign, failing to cope with both the breezy conditions and a well-organised Tow Law Town side. Harvey Walsh struck once in each half to send the visitors back down the A68 with a deserved victory in a game that will not live long in the memory—certainly not for the Ryton faithful. Louis Calvert’s stoppage-time penalty halved the deficit, but from open play RACA rarely looked like scoring on what proved to be a collective off day.

A new season and a smart new kit brought fresh optimism for Albion, but the hosts failed to build on the encouraging signs shown in pre-season in an otherwise forgettable contest at The Oldhaulage. One familiar feature, however, was the strong westerly wind, which arrived with impeccable timing for the opening whistle.

With the breeze behind them in the first half, Ryton were unable to make it count. Chances were few and far between as both sides cancelled each other out. Louis Calvert’s free-kick after 10 minutes was comfortably blocked by the Tow Law wall before rolling harmlessly through to Lawyers goalkeeper Dan Staples.

Staples was next called into action on 27 minutes when Nathan Beesley broke well down the right and found Callum Johnston, but his effort, although on target, lacked the power to seriously trouble the Tow Law captain.

The breakthrough arrived after 35 minutes from a Tow Law free-kick on the left. Harvey Walsh whipped a curling delivery towards goal, the flight deceiving Callum Corkhill before nestling in the top corner—a superb finish in a half that had offered precious little quality.

Ryton had a glorious opportunity to level just three minutes later. Beesley powered past two defenders before picking out debutant Rhys Hutchinson, but from close range he blazed over the crossbar.

That proved to be the final meaningful action of a first half in which the ball seemed to spend almost as much time out of play as on it. The wind undoubtedly played its part, but Albion were left hoping for a much-improved second-half display.

A quiet second period finally sparked into life on 63 minutes. A Tow Law clearance was gathered by Johnston, who lofted the ball back into the penalty area. Glenn Caygill headed it down to Louis Calvert on the goal line, but with Staples stranded, Harry Laviolette recovered brilliantly to beat the striker to the loose ball and clear the danger.

Within two minutes, Tow Law doubled their advantage. Substitute Charlie Bunton surged down the right before laying the ball into the path of Reece Brown, who found Walsh inside the area. His initial effort was blocked by Beesley, but the rebound fell kindly and Walsh calmly slotted home for his second of the afternoon.

Tow Law continued to threaten, and in the 78th minute substitute Adam Metcalfe almost repeated Walsh’s first-half strike with a 35-yard free-kick that forced Corkhill to back-pedal before tipping the ball over the crossbar.

Albion, meanwhile, looked increasingly reliant on a set piece to find a way back into the contest. Calvert fired a free-kick over the bar on 86 minutes before Ryton were handed a lifeline in stoppage time when Metcalfe was adjudged to have brought down Johnston just inside the area. Referee Chris Shield pointed to the spot, and Calvert confidently sent Staples the wrong way to reduce the arrears.

There was, however, too little time remaining for Albion to mount a late comeback, and Tow Law comfortably saw out the closing moments to secure all three points.

It was not the start Albion had hoped for, either in terms of result or performance, but there is little time to dwell on the disappointment, with a trip to FC Hartlepool on Tuesday evening offering an immediate opportunity to respond.
